Putting together lists is always a subjective pursuit, and never more so than when trying to rank people’s popularity. After all, what criteria does one use to evaluate “trendiness?” Media coverage? Competitive success? Instagram followers? Social media engagement rate?
For the second year in a row (inaugural list HERE) we have waded through hundreds of names, comparing apples with oranges and taking into account every factor we could come up with to decide who we thought were the most trending surfers of 2019. Deserving names will inevitably be left off of this list, just as they were last year, and we are sure you will have a lot to say about the surfers you feel should have been included. But as we can see, these were the 50 surfers who shaped our culture over the past year. Let the debates rage and the wailing and gnashing of teeth commence.
